Ashley Wagner feels 'bittersweet' about watching the Olympics instead of competing
Figure skater Ashley Wagner is in a difficult spot right now. She’s the most decorated female figure skater of the last five-plus years, a three-time national champion and 2016 world silver medalist, but she didn’t make the Olympic team. She had a gorgeous skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but she placed fourth and was named the first alternate.
Wagner sat down with Yahoo Sports’ Liz Loza to talk about how it feels to have to watch the Olympics instead of competing on the ice, which you can see in the video at the top of this post.
Wagner is honest and outspoken (she openly admitted she was “furious” at the scoring at the national championships), and she didn’t mince words here. She said it’s been bittersweet to have to sit on the sidelines in PyeongChang and watch her friends on Team USA, including her best friend Adam Rippon, compete without her.
But Wagner also said that she’s so thrilled to be able to watch Rippon and everyone else achieve their own Olympic dreams. She competed in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and now it’s someone else’s turn. The only way to get over such a big disappointment is to move on, and that’s just what Ashley is doing. She’s looking forward to what’s next, and her future looks busy and bright.
