Adrian Beltre passes Ichiro for most hits from a foreign-born player in MLB history

Adrian Beltre recorded his 3,090th career MLB hit, most ever by a foreign-born player, in the fourth inning of Wednesday night’s game between the Rangers and the Dodgers.

Beltre’s 3,090th hit put him one ahead of Ichiro, whose playing career ended earlier this season. Rod Carew (3,053) and Albert Pujols (3,031) round out the top four.

Beltre reached the 3,000-hit plateau last July and has continued on his impressive pace this season. Following his walk in the fifth inning of Wednesday night’s game, he’s slashing .313/.373/.425 this year.

Beltre keeps on chugging at 39 years old

Beltre made his debut in the majors in 1998 with the Dodgers as a 19-year-old. He collected 949 hits with Los Angeles, finishing second in the MVP race and winning the silver slugger in 2004, his final year in a Dodgers uniform.

He then accrued another 751 hits in five years with the Mariners, a stretch in which he won two gold gloves for his sterling defense at third base. He then spent a single All-Star campaign in Boston, adding another 189 hits to his total and winning a Silver Slugger.

For the last seven-plus years with Texas, Beltre has continued to play at a high level, even surpassing his previous performances in some aspects. As a Ranger, Beltre has collected 1201 hits, been a three-time All Star, won three Gold Gloves and captured two Silver Sluggers. The only thing he’s missing is a World Series championship, which he came within one game of in 2011 when the Rangers fell to the Cardinals 4-3.

Beltre’s double also put him into sole possession of the 21st spot on the all-time hits list. Next up for the Dominican Republic native is Dave Winfield, who finished his esteemed career with 3,110 hits.
