Albies' slam powers Braves past Mets
Ozzie Albies blasted a grand slam to cap Atlanta's six-run outburst in the sixth inning and lead the Braves to an 8-2 win over the visiting New York Mets on Tuesday at Turner Field.
It was the second grand slam in the last month for Albies, and his 16th homer of the season. The second baseman leads the National League with 37 extra base hits and 53 runs scored.
Atlanta improved to 8-3 against New York and handed the Mets their 14th loss in their last 17 games. The two N.L. East rivals conclude their two-game series on Wednesday afternoon.
Atlanta starter Mike Foltynewicz threw five scoreless innings and allowed only two hits. He struck out six. He left after 73 pitches. It marked the sixth straight start in which the big right-hander has allowed two or fewer runs.
The win went to reliever Shane Carle (4-1), who pitched two-thirds of an inning and was the beneficiary of Atlanta's go-ahead rally.
New York starter Zack Wheeler (2-5) gave up six runs on eight hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out two and suffered his first road loss of the season. It was a disappointing appearance for Wheeler, who had thrown seven scoreless innings in his last start against Baltimore.
The Braves opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Ender Inciarte's single brought in Tyler Flowers.
The Mets took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Jay Bruce drove in a pair of runs with a ground-rule double to left-center.
The Braves responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Freddie Freeman led off with a solo homer, his 13th, and Inciarte picked up another RBI with a single to left. That set up Albies' game-changing home run.
Atlanta tacked on a run in the seventh when Nick Markakis delivered his 20th double of the season that brought home Freeman.
