Anderson pitches Brewers past red-hot Mets
Right-hander Chase Anderson became the first Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher this season to last into the seventh inning, when he allowed just two hits over 6 1/3 frames Saturday night as the Brewers beat the streaking New York Mets 5-1 at Citi Field.
The win by the Brewers (8-7) snapped a nine-game winning streak by the Mets (11-2), who are still off to the best 13-game start in franchise history.
The loss cost New York manager Mickey Callaway a chance to tie Joe Morgan (12-1 with the 1988 Boston Red Sox) for the best 13-game start ever for a rookie manager.
Anderson (1-1) allowed one run, walked two and struck out five. He did not allow a hit for the opening 4 2/3 innings before Amed Rosario bounced an infield single behind second base.
Anderson's abbreviated no-hit bid came one day before the 31st anniversary of the Brewers' only no-hitter, which was thrown by Juan Nieves against the Baltimore Orioles.
Jeremy Jeffress got the final two outs of the seventh before Josh Hader struck out five in two perfect innings for his first big-league save.
Jonathan Villar provided Anderson all the support he'd need with a three-run homer in the second inning. The Brewers received insurance runs via solo homers from Jett Bandy (fourth inning) and Orlando Arcia (ninth inning).
Bandy and Travis Shaw had two hits apiece.
Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun left in the fifth inning due to back tightness.
The Mets scored their only run in the sixth when Michael Conforto was hit by a pitch with one out, went to second on Asdrubal Cabrera's groundout and scored on Yoenis Cespedes' single.
Cabrera went 0-for-4 to end his 11-game hitting streak.
Mets right-hander Matt Harvey (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings. Paul Sewald followed with three perfect innings.
