If only the Cincinnati Bengals could get all their injured players back on the field this quickly.

Coach Marvin Lewis’ medical scare lasted less than a day. There was a somewhat worrisome story on Tuesday that he had to step away from the team for a “minor health issue,” and that Lewis might not return until the end of the week. Had he been out all week, Lewis would have missed the Bengals’ preseason opener.

But the medical staff treating Lewis quickly determined the coach was dealing with a Baker’s cyst behind his knee, according to NFL Network’s Stacey Dales, and not a more concerning blood clot. By Tuesday night, Lewis was already back at work. On Wednesday morning he thanked the medical staff.

“I was able to return to work last night after receiving great medical care,” Lewis said in a statement released by the team. “I especially want to thank all of the doctors, nurses and technicians who treated me. I am glad to be back with the team as we prepare to play the Buccaneers on Friday.”

Last season we saw a few coaches – Gary Kubiak, Bruce Arians, Mike Zimmer – miss time with various medical issues, so the news about Lewis on Tuesday raised some alarms. Thankfully, he didn’t miss much time at all and it appears he’ll be on the sidelines for the Bengals’ season opener.
