The Capitals have introduced self-serve beer station so fans can pour their own drink

Ever want to pay $14.50 to pour yourself a beer? Now you can! The Washington Capitals have introduced a self-serve beer station in Capital One Arena that allows fans to pour their own drink without interacting with another person.

The station is located at section 417, and was put in as part of the arena’s offseason renovations. There are seven pouring stations and 21 taps available. The beer selections will be rotated throughout the season, according to the Washington Post.

The arena also installed a similar station for food items. Here’s what they look like:

Before you start scheming up ways to beat the system, the arena has protected against that. In order to get a drink at the beer station, fans have to buy a cup with a QR code, according to Food & Wine.

As the Post notes, the food stand brought in double the sales compared to a similar stand last season, so it appears there’s a market for this type of thing.

The concept of self-serve drink stations isn’t new. The 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star Game featured a pour-your-own beer station. In 2017, Sports Business Journal detailed that self-serve beer kiosks were actually on their way out.

Considering the Capitals are coming off a Stanley Cup win after years of frustration, it’s pretty fitting they are betting against a trend here.
