Diamondbacks' Lovullo, Cardinals' Molina punished for incident

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo and St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina each drew one-game suspensions for their actions during an incident in Sunday's game between the two clubs, Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday.

Molina immediately appealed his suspension, which had been slated to be served on Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. He is listed to catch and bat fifth, according to the lineup released by the Cardinals on their Twitter account.

Lovullo also was fined an undisclosed amount for his "inappropriate actions" in the second inning on Sunday. He will miss Tuesday's contest against the San Francisco Giants.

The incident began when Lovullo was debating balls and strikes with home plate umpire Tim Timmons. Lovullo referred to Molina by a profane term during the argument and that perturbed Molina, who charged toward Lovullo.

Timmons had to restrain Molina to keep him from reaching Lovullo, who was ejected from the contest.

The following day, Lovullo apologized for his comments about Molina.

"I said what I said," Lovullo told reporters. "I made a mistake with some of the wording that I chose. I think the one message that I want to say is that I respect Yadi, I think he's one of the best catchers in baseball. Has been for a long time.

"I think that's where I'm most disappointed in myself. I probably should have thought that through a little more clearly."

Bench coach Jerry Narron will serve as Arizona's manager on Tuesday night.
