Echo Fox isn’t letting memes be dreams.

On Thursday, the organization announced the signing of a League of Legends North American Challenger Series roster that is filled with…well, at least they’re popular. Here’s the roster:

  • Michael “Imaqtpie” Santana – AD carry?

  • Marcus “Dyrus” Hill – Top?

  • William “scarra” Li – Mid?

  • Danny “Shiphtur” Le – Also mid?

  • Joedat “Voyboy” Esfahani – Tristana mid? But maybe top?

  • Mark “MarkZ” Zimmerman – Analyst, Yahoo Esports contributor (full disclosure)

In their professional careers, the five combined to play a grand total of three roles: AD carry, mid, and top. The announcement does not include what roles they’ll be playing, so we’ll have to see what happens when they hit the Rift.

It’s worth noting that each of these guys has a popular streaming presence, with Imaqtpie being far and away the most popular Western streamer in League of Legends today. If Echo Fox is looking to make a play for streaming popularity, these five are a great place to start.

It’s hard to say exactly how serious this team will be from a competitive standpoint, but Echo Fox team owner and three-time NBA champion Rick Fox is certainly presenting this move as a serious deal with intentions to win.

Said Fox in a statement on the Echo Fox page, “As a former pro athlete, I know what it takes to compete at the highest level. You need hard work, a positive mind, and to be surrounded by an equally motivated team. You have to be in it to win it, and every one of these players has proved this time and time again, whether competing professionally or building their own brands and identities through livestreaming. These are tremendous athletes with tremendous identities, and we couldn’t be happier to have this dream team be a part of Echo Fox.”

Added Dyrus, “I said I closed the book on my professional story but I’m opening it back up again. It’s time to write new pages in a new chapter with Echo Fox. I missed the energy of the crowd and the thrill of competition, and with a great player-focused organization like Echo Fox behind us, I get to focus on playing how I want to play.”

If nothing else, watching Echo Fox in the Challenger Series will be entertaining. For more bizarre roster changes and memes, head over to the Yahoo Esports League of Legends hub.
