Giancarlo Stanton gets beer shower after breaking Marlins homer record

It’s August 14, and the Miami Marlins already have a new single-season home run king. With his two-run shot in the first inning, Giancarlo Stanton passed Gary Sheffield as the team’s single-season home run leader.

Stanton didn’t wait long to set the record. He managed it on the first strike he saw from Tyler Blach. With a 2-0 count, Stanton sent a 91 mph fastball deep into the stands in left field for his 43rd home run of the year. The shot set the Marlins’ record, and gave the team an early 2-0 lead. They would go on to win the contest 8-3.

Following the game, Stanton’s teammates rewarded him in the usual baseball manner. They put him in a cart in the shower and sprayed him with beer, water and shaving cream.

Some team love

That type of celebration should look awfully familiar, as the Los Angeles Angels did almost exactly the same thing to Mike Trout for his birthday.

Considering the streak Stanton is on right now, it’s amazing the San Francisco Giants decided to pitch to him at all. Coming into the contest, Stanton was hitting .322/.431/.917, with 21 home runs, since July 5. If that stat looks familiar, well, we covered that – and more – about Stanton’s ridiculous numbers Sunday, after he hit his 250th career home run.

Maybe we could have waited another day and just written this post, but are you really going to complain about more videos featuring Stanton hitting massive dingers? We didn’t think so.

For those keeping score at home, that’s two significant home run milestones for Stanton in two days. And 22 home runs for Stanton over the past 34 games.

We don’t think there are any other major milestones for Stanton to cross any time soon, though we probably shouldn’t doubt him at this point. He has an opportunity to break the single-game home run record every time he takes the field. Considering his current run, we shouldn’t rule that out right now.
