Lance Armstrong’s son is following in his fathers’s footsteps.

No, he’s not in the midst of a massive doping scandal and one of the greatest falls from grace in American sports and pop culture history. He’s pursuing athletics at a high level.

Luke Armstrong accepted an offer to play football for Rice on Wednesday. His father posted the moment on Instagram.

What’s surprising here is Luke’s position. He’s not built for speed like his father was. Standing 6-3 and 250 pounds according to the Austin American Statesman, Luke was an all-district guard for Texas state semifinalist Westlake last season and will join the Owls with preferred walk-on status in the fall.

Lance spoke with Yahoo News in 2017 about Luke playing football and his concussion concerns as a parent.

“I mean, he’s never had, to date — knock on wood — a head injury. And I don’t know that he’ll play past the high school level. So as a parent, you’re sitting there saying, ‘OK, he’s playing a sport, he’s focused on it, it’s keeping him’ — you know, I think sports are good for kids to keep ’em focused on something besides getting in trouble. And so, I’m happy for him now. And I think he’s not one of these unrealistic kids. He doesn’t think he deserves a scholarship to the University of Alabama or anything. He knows where he fits in and where that’s going to take him.”

It sounds like Luke has made it further playing football than even his proud father imagined.
