Lindsey Vonn, Candace Parker, Billie Jean King join ownership group of Angel City, NWSL's new team

The National Women’s Soccer League’s new expansion team has its official name and a new batch of famous owners.

The Los Angeles-based team will be called the Angel City Football Club (which wasn’t exactly a surprise), and the team’s Twitter account made official with the ceremonial changing of their profile name.

The LA expansion team was announced in July. Serena Williams (and her young daughter Olympia), Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach and a number of other female athletes are part of the founding ownership group, as are actresses Jennifer Garner and Academy Award winner Natalie Portman. Portman, who led the initial investor group, went on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday to announce the name.

Angel City gets more amazing owners

A number of new names have signed on to Angel City’s ownership group, giving it even more star power than it had before — if that’s even possible. The team announced on Wednesday that tennis legend and activist Billie Jean King, her partner and former tennis player Ilana Kloss, WNBA player Candace Parker, Parker’s daughter Lailaa, Alpine skiing legend and Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn, hockey player (and Vonn’s fiancé) PK Subban, NFL All-Pro Ryan Kalil, and former soccer player/broadcaster Cobi Jones have all joined the ownership group.

"We need everyone to invest in women's sports and Ilana and I are proud to stand with the Angel City FC ownership group and help make history in Southern California," King said via the OC Register. "Angel City's mission to make an impact on and off the field and to provide an opportunity to some of the best professional female athletes in the world to play on a stage as powerful as Los Angeles sends a strong message to young girls in the community and beyond."

Late night host James Corden, actress and activist Sophia Bush, and Latin pop superstar Becky G also joined the ownership group.

Angel City will make its NWSL debut in 2022.
