Megan Rapinoe endorses Elizabeth Warren for being 'bold', 'real' and 'listening to all of us'

Megan Rapinoe has a massive platform after leading the United States women’s national team to the World Cup title this summer amid a public spat with President Donald Trump and it keeps growing as she makes the rounds to accept end-of-the-year awards.

Now, she’s taking her activism further by giving out an official presidential endorsement Friday, days after saying her goal was to help in the 2020 election.

Rapinoe endorses Warren for 2020

The USWNT co-captain shared a tweet endorsing Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren, the senator from Massachusetts, with a video of the two women speaking on the phone. She starts by voicing disbelief she called the senator by her first name, rather than Senator Warren, then discusses the campaign and why she appreciates the candidate’s work.

“I just think that it’s amazing. It’s big, it’s bold,” Rapinoe said in the video. “I just don’t think we can get to a better place by walking this moderate line.”

Warren, 70, earned Rapinoe’s endorsement over former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana. A recent campaign slogan has become “I have a plan for that,” with a plethora of specific plans released throughout her campaign focusing on “big, structural change” that aims to end corruption in Washington and rebuild the middle class, among other issues.

Rapinoe wants ‘maniac’ out of office

Rapinoe, 34, accepted the Ballon d’Or this month as the best player in soccer, an award bestowed for her World Cup golden treble this summer. She grabbed headlines for her play on the pitch and saying she wouldn’t go to the White House when the U.S. won the title for a second consecutive time.

After accepting the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year award earlier this week, Rapinoe told Reuters she wants to assist the 2020 Democratic field.

“I think the most important thing is to get that maniac out of the White House,” Rapinoe told Reuters.

She has said she has no plans at the moment to run for office, and will instead use her voice to bring attention to injustice and how it should change for the better. In acceptance speeches this month, she has spoken on the power of positive influence, what Colin Kaepernick sacrificed that she did not, and even Sports Illustrated’s lack of diversity — while she was accepting the award.

Her continued activism could include rallies for Warren and even door-to-door campaigning.

“Get me on the bus, get me on one of those planes,” Rapinoe said, via Reuters. “I want to rile people up! Something about me is motivating people to do something, or people are interested.

“If I’ve got to knock on doors to get people to vote, I’m down.”

Rapinoe is already quite busy. The USWNT has a trial date with U.S. Soccer scheduled for May and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are this upcoming summer.
