Report: Seattle Mariners chosen to host 2023 All-Star Game

The Seattle Mariners haven't made the playoffs or hosted the All-Star Game since 2001. In 2023, at least one of those things will change.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Mariners and their home stadium, T-Mobile Park, have been chosen to host the 2023 All-Star Game and Home Run Derby.

MLB has already chosen the hosts for two other All-Star Games. The Los Angeles Dodgers will host festivities at Dodger Stadium in 2022 and the Philadelphia Phillies will do the same at Citizens Bank Park in 2026, when all eyes will be on Philadelphia as the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Beyond those two, MLB hasn't announced plans for any other hosts.

Seattle last hosted in 2001, when Cal Ripken Jr. hit a third-inning home run in what would be his final All-Star Game. That game was hosted at the brand new (at the time) Safeco Field. The name changed in January 2019 when T-Mobile acquired naming rights.

It's unclear if the Atlanta Braves will be given another shot to host in the next few years. They were originally supposed to host the 2021 All-Star Game, but MLB moved it to Coors Field in Denver after the Georgia legislature passed new voting laws.
