Mock draft has Giants selecting Louisville’s Lamar Jackson in 2018 NFL Draft
We are three weeks into the college football season and Week 2 of the NFL regular season begins Thursday night. Apparently, it’s never too early to start thinking about the NFL Draft and which collegiate players will be selected.
It’s too soon to determine draft order with fifteen games remaining on the NFL schedule. That hasn’t stopped CBS Sports.com’s Chris Trapasso from releasing a way-too-early first round draft projection.
Trapasso’s picks are based upon SportsLine’s Daniel Cypra’s predictions on each team’s regular season record released after the 2017 NFL Draft.
Cypra predicted the New York Football Giants will finish 2017 with a record of 9-7 and will pick 17th in the first round. The prediction of who the Giants would select is a little surprising: Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Jackson, the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner, is one of the nation’s best quarterbacks and a favorite to join Ohio State’s Archie Griffin as the only two-time Heisman winners. He accounted for 525 yards in the 17th ranked Cardinals 47-35 win over North Carolina last Saturday.
Trapasso described Jackson as “the antithesis of (quarterback) Eli (Manning), he’s an excellent scrambler and has taken a step forward in the pocket. He’ll instantly gel with (wide receiver) Odell Beckham Jr. in the Big Apple”.
The Giants drafted quarterback Davis Webb in the third round of this year’s draft as a potential heir to Manning but Jackson’s talent speaks for itself.
Again, it is way too early to speculate on what team which draft which player after one week of NFL football. There are too many factors to consider at this point including but not limited to injury, NFL team record, and the needs of each franchise.
The projection suggests the Giants will miss the playoffs with a 9-7 record. If the Giants make the postseason, Jackson may not be on the draft board by the time they’re on the clock in 2018 barring a trade or other circumstances yet to be determined.
Draft projections in the second week of September are absolutely meaningless. At least Trapasso has the Giants selecting a great collegiate player…at least for the time being.
