Updated: Rep clarifies DeMarcus Cousins Puma ad

Update, 9 p.m. ET: A representative from DeMarcus Cousins’ marketing agency contacted Yahoo Sports to clarify that their ad was not intended as a jab at Nike or Cousins’ Achilles injury.

“It is from a moment earlier this season when DeMarcus made a joke about Kevin Durant’s shoe coming off during the game and said, ‘That wouldn’t have happened in Pumas.’ … We definitely do not want this to be interpreted incorrectly as it was meant as a playful ad, not a knock at anybody.”

Golden State Warriors star DeMarcus Cousins unveiled a new ad campaign with Puma on his Instagram account Thursday.

Cousins signed with Puma in October after they made him a lucrative offer, but Nike had 10 days to match the offer to keep Cousins. Nike declined to do so, and it doesn’t look like he has any regrets.

We haven’t seen Cousins wear his Pumas on the court yet. In fact, we haven’t seen him in action at all. He’s still recovering from his Achilles injury, and there’s no date for his return.

Clarification: An earlier version of this story interpreted the ad as a jab at Cousins’ prior sneaker company, Nike. Reps clarified that was not the intent.
