NFL investigating if concussion protocol was followed with Russell Wilson

Although Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said he wasn’t concussed, answered all the training staff’s questions and was good to go back in Thursday night’s game, the NFL is going to look into it.

The NFL said it is investigating the concussion tests given Wilson after referee Walt Coleman sent him off the field to get checked. Wilson missed just one play. NBC showed him going under the medical tent for only a second or two before deciding he wanted out. Wilson went right back in the game.

Wilson was hit hard in the jaw on a hit that was penalized. NFL officials, due to changes in league protocol, have the ability to send a player out of the game to get checked for a concussion. Here’s Wilson’s explanation for what happened:

“I got smacked in the jaw pretty good there. I wasn’t concussed or anything like that. I felt completely clear. I was trying to move my jaw,” Wilson said.

“I think I was laying on the ground for a second just trying to get my jaw, I think Walt thought I was injured or something like that. I told him I was good, I was good. He said, ‘You’ve got to come off the field.’ I think Walt did a great job, first of all. He made the smartest decision. I was fine though. 100 percent fine.

“We finally went over through the whole concussion stuff and all that. We went through every question you can imagine. I answered even some more for him just so he knew I was good, then went back in there.”

Whether Wilson was or wasn’t concussed isn’t at the heart of the matter. It’s whether he was checked at all. Wilson briefly talked with someone from the Seahawks on the sideline right after he came out of the game, then he jogged to the medical tent. It’s hard to believe, based on what NBC showed, that he had a full concussion test.

As NFL.com pointed out, if concussion protocol isn’t followed a team is subject to fines and a potential loss of draft picks.
