NHL trade tracker: Sizing up the deals that occurred before the April 12 deadline

The NHL trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET on April 12. Here are the trades that have happened in the leadup to the final day:

April 11: The Pittsburgh Penguins acquire center Jeff Carter from the Los Angeles Kings for a conditional 2022 third-round draft pick and 2023 fourth-round pick. After parts of 10 seasons in L.A. that included two Stanley Cup victories by the Kings, Carter has been shipped to Pittsburgh. Playing behind Sidney Crosby and (once healthy) Evgeni Malkin, the 36-year-old Carter – who has one more year left on his deal – should slot in nicely as an experienced veteran in the Penguins' bottom six. He has 19 points in 40 games this season. The Kings are retaining 50% of Carter's salary to make the deal happen.

April 11: The Boston Bruins acquire defenseman Mike Reilly from the Ottawa Senators for a 2022 third-round pick. Boston lost a couple veteran blue-liners to free agency, and their defense has been exposed this season by injuries. Reilly, a pending unrestricted free agent, is dependable and has a career-best 19 points.

April 11: The New York Islanders acquire defenseman Braydon Coburn from the Ottawa Senators for a 2022 seventh-round pick. A depth move. But he does have plenty of playoff experience.

April 11: The Toronto Maple Leafs acquire goaltender David Rittich from the Calgary Flames for a 2022 third-round pick. Jack Campbell has set an NHL record with an 11-0 start, but goaltending depth can't hurt, especially with Frederik Andersen still on the injured list. Rittich wasn't likely to be re-signed in Calgary with Jacob Markstrom signed for six years, so the Flames get an asset. They retain 50% of the goalie's salary.

April 11: The Toronto Maple Leafs acquire forward Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets and forward Stefan Noesen from the San Jose Sharks. The Blue Jackets get a first-round pick and a 2022 fourth-rounder and the Sharks a fourth-rounder. Foligno, the Blue Jackets' captain, provides leadership, physical play and offense. He can move onto the Leafs' second or third line. The Sharks got involved in the deal to absorb some money. Columbus is retaining 50% of his salary and San Jose 25%. The Blue Jackets have now picked up two first-round picks in two days.

April 11: The New Jersey Devils acquire defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler from the Washington Capitals for a conditional third-round pick. Moving Siegenthaler gives the Capitals a little extra cap room if they pursue a goalie with playoff experience. Henrik Lundqvist tweeted Sunday that he was abandoning his attempt to come back this season because a checkup discovered heart inflammation. Siegenthaler will be a restricted free agent and the Devils have three unrestricted free agent defensemen on their roster.

April 11: The Montreal Canadiens acquire defenseman Jon Merrill from the Detroit Red Wings for a fifth-round pick and forward Hayden Verbeek. A depth move with Canadiens defenseman Ben Chiarot out long term with a broken hand. Verbeek's uncle, Pat, played two seasons with the Red Wings.

April 10: The Tampa Bay Lightning acquire defenseman David Savard from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a three-team trade with the Detroit Red Wings. The defending Stanley Cup champions were expected to stay on the sidelines at the deadline because of cap problems. But they added a defenseman who can play 20 minutes a game, kill penalties, deliver hits and block shots. They're paying only 25% of Savard's salary, with Columbus retaining half and Detroit 25%. The Blue Jackets get a first-round pick and a 2022 third-rounder, while the Red Wings get a fourth-round pick.

April 10: The Florida Panthers acquire defenseman Brandon Montour from the Buffalo Sabres for a third-round pick. The Panthers are without top defenseman Aaron Ekblad (leg surgery) and Montour provides solid depth. He has five goals this season.

April 10: The Colorado Avalanche acquire goaltender Devan Dubnyk from the San Jose Sharks for defenseman Greg Pateryn and a fifth-round pick. The Avalanche remember quite well how an injury to goalie Philipp Grubauer short-circuited their playoff hopes last year. Now, their depth is better. Pateryn was traded for the second time this season.

April 9: The Colorado Avalanche acquire defenseman Patrik Nemeth from the Detroit Red Wings for a 2022 fourth-round pick. The red-hot Avs beef up their depth on defense with a player they have familiarity with – Nemeth was part of Colorado's playoff squads in both 2018 and 2019.

April 9: The Toronto Maple Leafs acquire forward Riley Nash from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a conditional 2022 seventh-round pick. Toronto makes a depth pickup for the playoffs as the injured Nash, a pending unrestricted free agent, is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with a knee issue. CBJ could get a sixth-round pick instead of a seventh if Nash plays 25% of Toronto's playoff games.

April 8: The Chicago Blackhawks acquire forwards Brett Connolly and Henrik Borgstrom, defenseman Riley Stillman and a seventh-round draft pick from the Florida Panthers for defenseman Lucas Carlsson and forward Lucas Wallmark. This is the teams' second trade in less than a week. Florida appears to be clearing cap space for a bigger move. Connolly is a bottom-six forward who has scored 15 or more goals four times, Stillman is a physical player, and Borgstrom, playing in Finland, has good upside. Wallmark was also dealt to the Panthers at last year's deadline.

April 7: The New York Islanders acquire forwards Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac from the New Jersey Devils for a first-round pick, a 2022 conditional fourth-round pick and prospect forwards A.J. Greer and Mason Jobst. Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello was expected to make a move after captain Anders Lee was lost for the season, and he made a big one. Palmieri averaged 26 goals a season from 2015-20, and Zajac is a lifelong Devils player who was drafted by Lamoriello when he was GM in New Jersey. The Devils are retaining 50% of both players' salaries. The two were potential unrestricted free agents, and the deal keeps Palmieri away from the division rival Boston Bruins.

April 2: The Chicago Blackhawks acquire forward Vinnie Hinostroza from the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Brad Morrison. General manager Stan Bowman has a history of reacquiring former Blackhawks, and Hinostroza played his first three seasons in Chicago. The forward wasn't used much in Florida (zero points in nine games), but he's fast.

March 28: The Los Angeles Kings acquire forward Brendan Lemieux from the New York Rangers for a fourth-round pick. Lemieux (59 penalty minutes) will provide grit to a team whose leader had 23 minutes at the time of the trade. The Rangers get an asset for someone who likely would have been exposed in the expansion draft. He will get a bigger role in Los Angeles, too.

March 27: The Montreal Canadiens acquire center Eric Staal from the Buffalo Sabres for a third- and a fifth-round pick. Though Staal had three goals at the time, the veteran averaged 20 goals the previous two seasons with the Minnesota Wild. He can provide the offensive depth that the Canadiens need to hang on to a playoff spot. He scored in overtime in his Canadiens debut.

March 26: The Anaheim Ducks acquire forward Alexander Volkov from the Tampa Bay Lightning for forward prospect Antoine Morand and a 2023 seventh-round pick. The Lightning needed to make a move to aid their salary cap situation. Volkov scored in his first game with the Ducks.

March 21: The Colorado Avalanche acquire goalie Jonas Johansson from the Buffalo Sabres for a sixth-round pick. With backup goalie Pavel Francouz hurt and Hunter Miska ineffective, the Avalanche needed someone to give workhorse netminder Philipp Grubauer an occasional break.
