Odell Beckham Jr. continues his double standard argument in relation to Tom Brady's antics

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady got into it with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels last week. It was a big deal because it was Brady, but pretty much instantly excused because it was Brady.

Brady has a history of histrionics on the field and occasionally on the sideline too. It’s not new for him to argue with coaches. But New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. noticed and wondered why he gets more criticism for the same thing.

Beckham said on Twitter that he was just trying to follow Brady (who he referred to the “goat” in his Twitter emoji) and that he has the same emotion for the game.

This has obviously been eating at Beckham, because on Wednesday he posted a video on Instagram comparing some of his various emotional outbursts to Brady.

Beckham is right in many ways, and there’s no doubt his outbursts have been blown out of proportion for a while now. Players get heated during games. NFL sidelines aren’t the place for calm, measured conversations. It’s an emotional game. Unless things get physical, it’s usually meaningless when teammates argue on the sideline. When Beckham gets excited on the sideline or Brady yells at McDaniels, it makes for a memorable video clip but it’s usually not a big deal to those involved.

But yes, there are double standards for players. Right or wrong, the more accomplished, the more that gets excused. Michael Jordan did some things that a lesser player wouldn’t get away with, because he was Jordan. Beckham is a great player in his own right, but he hasn’t reached Brady’s level. There’s also a hierarchy in football, and established quarterbacks do things that won’t fly from other players. Not all players are treated equally. If Beckham thinks there’s a double standard, it’s because there is a double standard. This is a concept as old as football itself.

Beckham does get more criticism than Brady for many of the same things, and he has clearly noticed. But it doesn’t sound like he’s going to change. Brady probably won’t either.
