Orioles sign free agent RHP Cashner

The Baltimore Orioles signed free agent right-hander Andrew Cashner to a two-year contract, the team announced Thursday.

According to multiple media outlets, Cashner landed a $16 million deal that includes a $10 million vesting option for 2020. It is a team option if Cashner pitches 340 combined innings over the next two seasons and switches to a player option if Cashner pitches 360 innings.

"I don't know a lot (about the Orioles)," Cashner said. "I do know that they need some starting pitching, and here it is, show up every day and whoever I can help out, help out and my job is to come here and pitch and win."

Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said, "He's a guy who's pitched well in the American League. That's something that I think played in his favor. And doing a lot of the homework on the other part of it, I think we just think it's a good all-around fit for us and especially since it's something that is a big need for us and something that's been in the works for quite a while.

"Sometimes we get so involved because it doesn't happen the first two weeks after the season's over, but these things don't happen easily. We think we have some good things to sell here, and I think Andrew knew that."

Cashner, 31, went 11-11 with a 3.40 ERA in 28 starts for the Texas Rangers last season. The 11 victories were a career best.

Overall, Cashner is 42-64 with a 3.80 ERA over eight major league seasons with the Chicago Cubs (2010-11), San Diego Padres (2012-16), Miami Marlins (2016) and Rangers (2017).
