Overwatch hits 30 million players, adding 5 million since January

Blizzard has announced via Twitter that Overwatch has more than 30 million players, up from 25 million in January.

That number is just the amount of users the game has accrued and doesn’t tell us anything about how many active players there are, but it’s impressive nonetheless. It’s also unclear how many copies were sold per platform.

The continued increase audience is good news for Overwatch as an esport, particularly with the Overwatch League on the horizon. While we don’t know all that much about the OWL itself, we’ve gotten hints about the location-based tournament here and there. Our very own Travis Gafford recently spoke to Immortals owner about the future of OWL. The more players invested in playing the game, the more likely it is that it’ll find a spectator audience.

In other news, Overwatch APEX started last night, featuring a Lunatic-Hai team that just kicked off two of their recently signed players. Also, the countries headed to the 2017 Overwatch World Cup have been confirmed. For more, head over to the Yahoo Esports Overwatch hub.
