She Said, He Said: Chet Holmgren? Jabari Smith? Paolo Banchero? Here's who Thunder should draft

Lottery luck smiled on the Thunder. Tuesday night, Oklahoma City snagged the No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft. It's not the top spot, of course, but in this year's draft, there sure look to be three players with the potential to be superstars. Chet Holmgren. Jabari Smith. Paolo Banchero. So picking No. 2 seems pretty darn good for the Thunder.

But who will the Thunder take if given the chance at No. 2?

We don't know who Orlando will take with the first pick, but regardless of what the Magic do, Sam Presti and the Thunder will have their draft board that puts those top players in the order OKC brass believe they should go. So, how should they rank the top three prospects?

Berry: I love Smith and Banchero. Holmgren not so much. I'm worried about his weight. He's 7-foot tall, 194 pounds. Holmgren is wonderfully skilled. Good shooter. Can handle the ball. Excellent rim protector. But I worry that he'll get pushed around. Can Holmgren gain 35 pounds and retain his skill and whatever movement he has? If so, sign me up. But I just don't know. The NBA is a brutal league. Ruffians lay in wait for players like Holmgren.

Jenni: Holmgren's light frame worries me, too. He was interviewed along with Smith and Banchero before the lottery results were announced Tuesday, and Holmgren looked like a waif next to them. Then, ESPN had legendary big man David Robinson join the group. He stood next to Holmgren, and while I have no doubt The Admiral has added a few pounds since his playing days, his shoulders seemed twice as wide as Holmgren's. Is that a deal breaker? I dunno. But it does concern me.

Berry: Now, if this was last year, and Holmgren was in the mix, maybe. Cade Cunningham and Jalen Green and the like were outstanding prospects and have proven to already be quality NBA players, but they don't seem on the same level as the potential of Smith and Banchero. Smith, particularly, intrigues me. I hate the comparisons to Kevin Durant, because that's not fair, but Smith is a multi-level scorer, 6-foot-10, able to switch on defense and protect the rim. That's a heck of a player. That's my hope for the Thunder. Jabari Smith.

Jenni: If I was ranking the three, I'd go Smith, Banchero, Holmgren. I give Banchero the edge over Holmgren because of his athleticism and size. Watch him play, and you can close your eyes and see his game fitting perfectly with today's NBA. He's got the size to play in the paint at 6-foot-10, but he's shown he can stretch the floor, too. He shot 33.8 percent from behind the arch in his one season at Duke. The Thunder loves "positionless basketball," and Banchero's versatility would fit nicely with that, too.

Berry: You're right. Banchero is the safest pick. But Smith's upside is too tempting to pass on. His ballhandling is not up to Durant's just-out-of-college standard, and that's no small thing, but otherwise, Smith is a dream prospect. So, I too, rank them Smith, Banchero, Holmgren. But I'm good with any of the three. It's been 13 years since Presti had a draft pick this high. I don't think he'll miss.

Jenni: Presti has been money in this range, so yes, it's hard not to trust whatever decision he makes. Will the pick become the next Durant or Westbrook? That will depend on the player, how much he works, how much he wants it, and it will depend on the franchise, how it develops him. But again, that's been a strength of the Thunder's — finding guys who want it, then developing them. I have to admit, I'm trying to temper my expectations, but it really feels like any of these guys, Smith or Banchero or Holmgren, could be stars in Thunder blue.
