Smash Rivalries results: Hungrybox takes first, West Coast wins crew battle

Smash Rivalries is in the books.

The West Coast prevailed over its East Coast counterparts in the latest chapter of their crew rivalry, but the East Coast had the last laugh, as they took the top three spots in the singles invitational. The field was led by Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, who won the tournament over Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett in Grand Finals.

Hungrybox had little trouble coasting to the finals, handily defeating Joey “Lucky” Aldama, Sami “DruggedFox” Muhanna, and Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni before beating Wizzrobe in both the Winners Finals and Grand Finals. That last set didn’t come easily, though. Wizzrobe reset the Grand Finals after a thrilling fourth round where time expired and a fifth round where Wizzrobe was down 1-2 on the stock count. Hungrybox would sweep the second Grand Finals set 3-0.

For Hungrybox, the wins were a redemption statement. He previously lost 0-3 to Wizzrobe at WTFox2 and Smash Conference 69 in the last six months.

The full singles results are as follows:

  • 9th (tie) – Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman, Joey “Lucky” Aldama, Johnny “S2J” Kim, DaJuan “Shroomed” McDaniel

  • 13th (tie) – Weston “Westballz” Dennis, Ryan “The Moon” Coker-Welch, James “Duck” Ma, Kevin “PewPewU” Toy

The singles bracket was characterized by some noteworthy upsets. First, Mang0 faced ChuDat in a rematch of ChuDat’s stunning Smash Summit 4 upset. While Mang0 went up 2-0 early, ChuDat took the next three games to shock Mang0 again and send him to the loser’s bracket. ChuDat finished in fifth, ultimately losing to Wizzrobe and Druggedfox.

This was also a good day for Axe, who managed to eliminate two of the Melee gods. Axe first beat Mew2King to reach top 8, sending Echo Fox’s own to a ninth place finish. For an encore, he knocked off Mang0 3-1 to leave the Cloud9 Smasher in seventh place. Axe finished in fifth place, his loser’s bracket journey coming to an end against SFAT.

The duo of 4Leaf Mang0 (Mang0 & Lucky) won the Doubles portion of the weekend. They were knocked down to loser’s bracket early on Saturday by the team of We’ll Sleep Anywhere (Hungrybox & Mew2King), but the two teams met again in Grand Finals. The West Coast team won the runback handily, taking both of the final sets 3-1.

The doubles results are as follows:

  • 2nd – We’ll Sleep Anywhere (Hungrybox & Mew2King)

  • 3rd – PewFat (PewPewU & SFAT)

  • 4th – KFC (Shroomed & S2J)

  • 5th (tie) – Pokeballz (Westballz & Axe), New York Slap Chop (Swedish Delight & The Moon)

  • 7th (tie) – Chew Wizzy (ChuDat & Wizzrobe), DruggedDuck (Druggedfox & Duck)

The crew battle took place on Saturday night, the first such competition between the West Coast and the East Coast since MLG Anaheim in 2014. The West Coast found themselves down 20-22 before they sent in Westballz. Westballz took two stocks off Wizzrobe and went toe-to-toe with Hungrybox on the Dreamland stage, taking three stocks before bowing out.

That set up SFAT to take Hungrybox’s last stock, as well as four stocks from both The Moon and DruggedFox and one more stock from Duck. The West Coast squad cruised to victory from there, with Axe cementing the victory over Mew2King with all four of his stocks to spare.
