Sparc is a VR 'sport' from the makers of EVE Online

CCP, the team behind the long-running cult space MMORPG EVE Online, has announced Sparc, a new 1v1 competitive game for virtual reality headsets.

A combination of Tron disc battles and Windjammers, Sparc lets players use their VR headsets and controllers to throw, dodge, and block curving projectiles. Sparc was explicitly built as a game aimed at an esports audience, and as such will include online play and spectator modes to facilitate competition.

CCP isn’t the first traditional game developer to make an attempt at VR esports. In October of last year, Guerrilla Games put out RIGS, a mech game for PlayStation VR. Due to the relatively low early adoption rate of virtual reality headsets, it didn’t exactly set the esports world on fire. Oculus Touch competitive pack-in The Unspoken met a similar fate, despite it being a solid game in its own right.

Sparc is set for release “later this year,” and will be coming out on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR.
