Street Fighter II, Halo: Combat Evolved, Pokemon Red and Green and more inducted into Video Game Hall of Fame
The Strong Museum’s World Video Game Hall of Fame has announced its official inductees for 2017. This year’s list of games features Street Fighter II, Halo: Combat Evolved, Pokemon Red and Green, and Donkey Kong.
Finalists that didn’t quite make the list include Myst, Portal, Resident Evil, Solitaire, Tomb Raider, Wii Sports, Final Fantasy VII, and Mortal Kombat.
A modernized version of Street Fighter II, titled Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, will be released for the Nintendo Switch on May 26, 2017. The game is powered by the same HD graphics that came with 2008’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and will include a handful of new features. Most notable is the inclusion of two new characters: Violent Ken, who first appeared as a sub-boss in SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos, and Evil Ryu, who debuted in Street Fighter Alpha 2.
Street Fighter II was originally released in arcades in 1991 as a sequel to 1987’s Street Fighter. The game was later launched on the SNES in 1992. Interestingly, Street Fighter II’s opening scene featured two mysterious characters, who remained nameless for 25 years. Capcom finally identified them in May last year.
