Street Fighter V pro Punk teabags his way to a big win at NCR 2017

Victor “Punk” Woodley capped off one of the most impressive Street Fighter V Season 2 runs to date with a victory over Capcom Cup 2016 champion Du “NuckleDu” Dang at NorCal Regionals 2017 Sunday night.

Punk cemented his spot in Capcom Cup 2017 with his victories at NCR and West Coast Warzone in the past two weeks. Players no longer automatically qualify for Capcom Cup with the updated rules for CPT 2017, but Punk earned 400 and 160 points at NCR and WCW, respectively, putting him in first place on the Global Leaderboard with 570 points total.

For the most part, Punk has been carving up the competition in Street Fighter V. However, he’s had to come through the loser’s bracket the last two weeks. At NCR, Punk beat Yusuke Momochi to get into winners top 8. He shut out Long “LPN” Nguyen 3-0 before losing to NuckleDu in a tight 3-2 winner’s finals.

Punk bullied his way past Ai “Fuudo” Keita to get into grand finals, where he put on his most impressive performance by beating NuckleDu 3-1 in two straight sets. At times, NuckleDu looked bewildered he couldn’t find a way to shut Punk down.

Punk was happy to give NuckleDu a dose of his own medicine, teabagging him when he had the chance and trolling at the character select screen when NuckleDu needed a moment between games.

NuckleDu and Punk were also two of four Americans to make top 8 at NCR, which included LPN’s first Premier Event top 8 and WCW runner-up Christopher “NYChrisG” Gonzalez. While Fuudo, Bruce “GamerBee” Hsiang, and Kenryo “Mago” Hayashi are no strangers to the big stage at Premier Events, Masato “Bonchan” Takahashi surprised many by making his first top 8 playing as Nash in Season 2.

Nash’s effectiveness had been severely reduced in Season 2 thanks to nerfs to his dash and normal attacks. Bonchan opted to stick with the neutered character over his original choice, Ryu, when many other players wouldn’t, including Lee “Infiltration” Seon-woo, who backed out of NCR 2017 because he felt he wasn’t ready for the CPT.

NCR’s top 8 results are as follows:

1. Punk
2. NuckleDu
3. Fuudo
4. Bonchan
5. ChrisG
5. LPN
7. Mago
7. GamerBee

All eight players are currently placed 21st or higher on the CPT Global Leaderboard.
