Texas WR pens poem about racism, Trump and being black in America
Texas wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey published a poem last week about systemic racial inequality in the United States.
The poem is dated July 10 and Humphrey tweeted it on Friday. In it, he brings up protests for racial equality, the election of President Donald Trump, slavery and his college football career.

America, America, the land of the free
Where black people can die from just being black and free
They protest to be able to live life in peace like the majority
Thugs and animalistic people is all you see
In reality, all they really want in life is equality
Instead, America which is the land of the free
Elects a president with zero political history
To restore the long legacy of white supremacyMinorities were never a part of the American dream
They were only brought here to build your dream
I used to believe in this American dream
Dream that one I would be playing in front of thousand, on a college team
I have achieved that dream
And believe that, it was only a schemeFor you to continue to exploit black men
To continue to view them as animals, Then
Have the nerve to say ‘Make America Great Again’
It was only great for white men
You on the other hand just want free labor again
So, you continue to try to find new and creative ways to enslave black men
Whether you agree with any or all of the premises of Humphrey’s poem, you can’t argue that it wasn’t thought out or didn’t come from the heart. And isn’t it nice when athletes express their thoughts and show themselves to be well-rounded humans?
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman asked Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte about Humphrey’s poem at Big 12 media days on Tuesday and Del Conte said he applauded Humphrey’s poem and wanted to talk with him about it.

Humphrey was Texas’ second-leading receiver in 2017.
