Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera to have season-ending biceps surgery

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera has a ruptured left biceps tendon that will require season-ending surgery.

Ron Gardenhire: Very sad day for our baseball team

Manager Ron Gardenhire broke the news to reporters Tuesday night.

“Definitely a big blow for our ballclub and that young man,” Gardenhire told reporters. “He’s been trying to come back and I feel terrible for him. He feels terrible. We gotta try and help him get through this thing. Very sad day for our baseball team though.”

Cabrera left Tuesday’s game against the Twins to undergo an MRI. He was seen leaving the Tigers clubhouse with a brace on his arm before Gardenhire shared the news.

Cabrera suffered the injury in the third inning. He swung and missed at a Jake Odorizzi pitch before clutching his left arm and immediately walking toward the dugout.

Cabrera’s been battling injuries

Cabrera left an April 29 game against the Baltimore Orioles with spasms in his left biceps and missed three games. He also did a stint on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain.

The 35-year-old two-time AL MVP was batting .301 with three home runs and 22 RBI in 155 plate appearances through 37 games this season. It was looking like somewhat of a rebound year after he hit a career-worst .249 with 16 home runs and 60 RBI in 2017 while playing through herniated disks in his back.

Gardenhire told reporters that catcher John Hicks will be the primary option at first base in light of Cabrera’s injury. Hicks is hitting .284 with five home runs and 22 RBI in 158 plate appearances through 41 games this season.

When and if Cabrera returns in 2019, the Tigers will still owe him $162 million on a contract that runs through 2023.
