Titans bring back Marz
The Tennessee Titans signed tackle Tyler Marz. Marz has spent much of his two years in the NFL with the Titans.
Marz was a fascinating prospect. His measurables were horrible at the NFL Draft Combine, but his production was outstanding. He was able to block several name defenders and hold them to zero sacks. Marz also led the way for some gaudy rushing stats. Any draft theory associated with 40 times, bench press, and shuttle times etc. would not translate to Marz making the Titans nor still being in the NFL. With Marz one can throw all those theories away and simply roll with that he is a good player and effective blocker.
Early this season, Marz was signed off the Titans practice squad by the Los Angeles Chargers. Brad Seaton had been cut on cut-down day and then re-signed to replace Marz. The Chargers released Marz this week. The Titans again released Seaton to have Marz on the practice squad.
The Titans tried to make Marz into a backup guard this summer. Marz was an effective backup tackle, but if he could also play guard this would assure him a roster spot and improve their depth. Marz was fine as backup tackle but struggled some as a guard. With two excellent tackles, Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin, the Titans truly need two quality backups. Dennis Kelly has filled in well as a tackle, but “just in case” they could use two. The 53 man roster doesn’t necessarily provide enough room for this luxury though. Marz really needed to develop into a guard/tackle combo. Since he is again on the Titans, he should have this season and next offseason to further develop.
Other Waiver Questions
Vontae Davis was released by the Indianapolis Colts. Many Titans fans have written in asking if the Titans will sign him and/or insisting that they do. Davis is a bit like Perrish Cox last season. Yes, he was a top cornerback, but his confidence is clearly gone. A cornerback without confidence is about useless in the NFL. They have to “man up” against superior athletes at wide receiver and shut them down. Confidence is an essential, yet rarely discussed, attribute to play the cornerback position. It’s entirely possible that Davis can be coached up and regain his form and confidence, but that’s a project. I don’t imagine the Titans wish to undertake that project.
