NorCal Regionals returns to Capcom Pro Tour 2017 as a Premier Event, which will bring many of Street Fighter V’s top players out to Sacramento, CA this weekend.

Capcom Cup 2016 champion Du “NuckleDu” Dang headlines the event. Other top North American players include Victor “Punk” Woodley — who won West Coast Warzone in SoCal last weekend — Eduardo “PR Balrog” Perez, Christopher “NYChrisG” Gonzalez, Justin Wong, Kenneth “K-Brad” Bradley, and Darryl “Snake Eyez” Lewis, who has had a resurgence of late at ELeague and West Coast Warzone with Zangief and Akuma.

As is usually the case, a handful of top Japanese players have arrived to try and earn the lion’s share of CPT points at NCR, including Daigo Umehara, Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi, Tatsuya Haitani, Yusuke Momochi, Kenryo “Mago” Hayashi, and Ai “Fuudo” Keita.

The most notable player not in attendance is Evo 2016 champion Lee “Infiltration” Seon-woo, who recently revealed he was withdrawing from NCR because he wasn’t prepared for the Capcom Pro Tour.

Infiltration won NCR last year, beating Tokido for the second straight week after Final Round, but the story of that weekend was the “death pool.” NCR is one of the few events employing the death pool, which puts all players who register late or on-site in one bracket rather than re-seeding the already established pools.

Martin “Marn” Phan stole the show as he navigated a 50-plus player death pool that included Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez, Mago, Chris Tatarian, and K-Brad with his ridiculous R. Mika play. Marn made it into top 8 by beating NuckleDu and Ricki Ortiz before losing to Justin Wong in loser’s semi-finals.

Marn is registered early for NCR 2017 so unfortunately he will not be featured in the death pool this year.

You can catch all of the Street Fighter V action on the Capcom Fighters Twitch channel.

In related CPT event news, Hypespotting 6 is also taking place this weekend. The CPT Ranking Event will be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland and feature top players from the region such as Olivier “Luffy” Hay, Ryan Hart, Ben “Problem X” Simon, and Sean “ImStillDaDaddy” Dench. You can catch Hypespotting’s Street Fighter V action on the Versus Scotland Twitch channel.

Since NCR is a Premier Event, the winner will take home 400 points and will be in contention to qualify for Capcom Cup 2017 if they are not already in the running. Hypespotting is a CPT Ranking Event so the winner will earn 160 points towards the Global Leaderboard and an invitation to the European Regional Final, which is detailed in the updated CPT ruleset.

Michael Martin can’t be at NCR this weekend in person but he will be in spirit. Follow him on Twitter @Bizarro_Mike.
