Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall gets $7.75M to resign after investigation into player abuse allegations
Gregg Marshall is no longer Wichita State’s basketball coach.
The school announced Marshall’s resignation on Tuesday and said that he would be paid nearly $8 million to leave. Marshall was investigated after numerous allegations of player abuse became public.
“This was a difficult decision, but one I feel was necessary for my family, the university and, most importantly, the student-athletes,” Marshall said in a school statement. “I remain grateful for my years spent at Wichita State. I wish to thank the coaches, student-athletes, the university, the community, and all of Shocker Nation for their unending dedication, support and loyalty. I am incredibly proud of this men’s basketball program and all it has achieved over the past 14 years and am confident of its continued success.”
Marshall will receive $7.75 million over six years from Wichita State as part of his decision to resign. Marshall’s departure had become inevitable in recent days. Wichita State said assistant coach Isaac Brown would be the team’s interim head coach.
The settlement is a handsome sum for a coach accused of many disturbing things.
“Our student-athletes are our primary concern,” Wichita State athletic director Darron Boatright said. “While the university acknowledges the success of the basketball program under Coach Marshall, this decision is in the best interest of the university, its student athletes and the WSU community. WSU will continue its pursuit of excellence with the help of its student-athletes, staff and loyal supporters of the basketball program.”
Gregg Marshall accused of physical and verbal abuse
The allegations against Marshall were downright awful as he was accused by multiple former players of both verbal and physical abuse. Marshall was accused of punching a former player in the back, putting his hand around a staffer’s neck and was even accused of racial verbal abuse against a Native American player among other allegations.
There was also this disturbing incident during an exhibition game in 2016 as Marshall went after game officials.

Marshall was 331-121 at Wichita State
Marshall has a career record of 525-204 as a head coach. He was 277-194 in nine years at Winthrop before going to Wichita State after the 2006-07 season. In 13 seasons at Wichita State, Marshall took the Shockers to the NCAA tournament eight consecutive times and the team made the Final Four in 2012-13.
His resignation comes eight days before Wichita State is set to start the 2020-21 basketball season. The Shockers are scheduled to play Utah State on Nov. 25.
