Jakob “YamatoCannon” Mebdi has been signed (pending Riot approval) as the new head coach of Team Vitality’s League of Legends team, the team announced Thursday morning. He has signed three split contracts, keeping him on the roster until the end of 2018.

Until recently, YamatoCannon was the coach of Splyce, where he led the team from an eighth place finish in the 2016 Spring Split to a 2016 World Championship appearance. He left his former team after their departure from the 2017 EU LCS Spring Split playoffs in the quarterfinals.

Vitality seems to be aiming for a similar turnaround to Splyce’s in 2016, as Vitality found themselves in fourth place of Group B in spring, missing the playoffs with a 3-10 match record.

Former Vitality head coach Heo “Irean” Yeong-cheol won’t be reprising his role for summer, but the organization will be keeping him on the roster in a new role, according to the announcement.
