2GGC Civil War starts on Friday, March 24, bringing together some of the top Super Smash Bros. for Wii U players from around the world. The weekend will conclude with the special 10v10 crews battle between Team ZeRo, led by Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios, versus Team Ally, led by Elliot “Ally” Carroza.

This week, Yahoo Esports looks at five potential marquee matchups likely to take place during the Civil War crews battle. Each day, we look at two opposing players and their Smash history.

The week continues with two of the fastest-rising Smash 4 players: Eric “Mr. E” Weber (Team Ally) vs. Leonardo “MKLeo” Perez (Team ZeRo).

The story

This edition of Civil War Room will be a little different: Mr. E and MKLeo have never actually met one-on-one in a tournament setting.

The most intriguing element of this potential matchup is that they are considered the two best Marth players in the game, each with different styles. Mr. E’s plays Marth patiently, reacting to opponents’ mistakes and taking advantage of the character’s tipper mechanic to apply pressure. He’ll also utilize tipper forward-smash or Marth’s Counter to further pressure ledges, making him a dangerous opponent in off-stage situations.

MKLeo’s Marth is nothing less than a machine. He makes the most of his tipper mechanic to land strings of combos and finish opponents in multiple ways — either with a forward-tilt, down-throw to up-air, or down-throw to up-smash — executed with ruthless precision. While MKLeo’s Marth is considered among the world’s best, he’ll adjust to certain matchup problems by switching to Cloud or Meta Knight.

Their Marths have been compared frequently in the Smash 4 community, but the two have also bonded over their love of the character. Mr. E and MKLeo practiced together, each showing what they could do with Marth, a topic that Mr. E addressed during his Genesis 4 interview with Yahoo Esports.

“I thought Marth was a bad character,” Mr. E said. “But [MKLeo] showed me now what Marth could do, so I’m gonna try my best to implicate what he does in my play and I think I could do something even bigger if I just play right.”

While both players are known for their Marth play, their careers have taken different trajectories. Mr. E was inconsistent over 2015 and the early part of last season, but showed tremendous improvement in the latter half of 2016. Having learned from his losses, Mr. E is on the cusp of breaking out, finishing in 9th place at APEX 2016, 2GGT: KTAR Saga, Shine 2016, The Big House 6, 2GGC: Genesis Saga, and Frostbite 2017. He’s also shown flashes of brilliance in wins over both Ally and ZeRo.

Meanwhile, MKLeo made his United States debut in October 2016 but has made a tremendous impact in his short time in America. He took first place at Canada Cup 2016, 2GGT: ZeRo Saga (which included a win over ZeRo himself), and Genesis 4. In between trips to the U.S., he’s dominated the Smash Pendiente weeklies in Mexico to keep his game sharp. At just 15 years old, he has the potential to be a top level player for years to come.
