Dabuz wins 2GGC: Civil War, 2GGC: Nairo Saga set for June

The smoke has cleared from 2GGC: Civil War, considered to be the most stacked Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament in the game’s history. In a tournament filled with upsets, Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby emerged the winner, beating Griffin “Fatality” Miller 3-1 in the grand finals. This is Dabuz’s first tier 1 tournament win.

Dabuz was a model of consistency in a tournament filled with major upsets. The Renegades player made it all the way through the winners side of the bracket, dropping only four games total, according to PG Stats: one to Fatality, one to Jestise “MVD” Negron, and two to Zack “CaptainZack” Lauth, the only player to take Dabuz to a fifth and final game.

Here are the final results:

  • 1st – Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby (Rosalina & Luma/Olimar)

  • 2nd – Griffin “Fatality” Miller (Captain Falcon)

  • 3rd – T (no name given) (Link)

  • 4th – Zack “CaptainZack” Lauth (Bayonetta)

  • 5th – Noriyuki “Kirihara” Kirihara (Rosalina & Luma)

  • 5th – Tyler “Marss” Martins (Zero Suit Samus)

  • 7th – Eita “Hikaru” Hoshi (Donkey Kong/Little Mac)

  • 7th – Mason “Locus” Charlton (Ryu)

Civil War was a terrible weekend for some of Smash 4’s best players. The upsets were capped off by top-ranked Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios losing to Matthew “Xzax” Liberatore in pools and Luhtie (no name given) in top 96. ZeRo finished in 49th place, the worst placing of his career.

Elliot “Ally” Carroza only fared slightly better. He lost to eventual 7th place finisher Locus in top 96 and lost early Sunday to Eric “ESAM” Lew, after ESAM made a sudden switch to Samus and won three straight games. Ally finished the tournament in 25th place.

Dabuz was the only player out of the PGR top 10 to make Civil War’s top 8. The field was filled with top Japanese players and mid-tier players and was eye-opening for its character diversity. T’s Link and Hikaru’s Donkey Kong, considered lower-tier characters, were among the most surprising character choices to reach the top 8.

The Civil War crews battle followed the top 8, with Team ZeRo taking the win over Team Ally. Team Ally looked poised to pull away, but Rei “komorikiri” Furukawa took six straight stocks near the end to pull things back in Team ZeRo’s favor, with Leonardo “MKLeo” Perez closing out the battle against Takuto “Kameme” Ono. The crews battle was also notable for ZeRo opening the battle against Civil War winner Dabuz and eliminating him.

Civil War concluded with 2GGaming announcing the next installment of its major Saga series: 2GG Nairo Saga, named for player Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada. This is expected to be part of the 2GG Championship Series, with competitors earning points towards the final December Saga and a $100,000 prize pool. The event will take place on the weekend of June 10-11 at the Esports Arena in Santa Ana, CA.
